Philippa Dowding

Philippa Dowding has worked at the craft of writing since her childhood. She wrote her first book when she was nine, and then burned it, which taught her a great lesson: back up your work and if something isn’t to your liking, put it in the bottom drawer and come back to it later.

At university she studied English Language and Literature, first at the University of Western Ontario, then at the University of Toronto, where she earned a Master of Arts degree, and set out on a career in publishing.

She worked as Senior Copywriter and Creative Manager for Maclean Hunter and Rogers Publishing. In 2000, she struck out on her own as a freelance copywriter, a job she continues to enjoy today when she’s not writing novels or poetry. Her many clients include magazine publishers, fundraisers, advertising agencies, NGOs, movie producers, website owners and others.

She has won several industry awards for magazines as varied as Maclean’s, Chatelaine, Today’s Parent and Canada’s History. Her poetry has appeared in MotherVerse Magazine, The Adirondack Review, and The Literary Review of Canada and many other journals.

Philippa lives in Toronto with her family, and attends writer’s meetings and retreats with the Black Horse Press whenever possible.
